The secret behind Adisadel College White House explained.

This building which now serves as a residence for the Head Prefect and Chapel Prefect of Adisadel College, was initially built by the Asante Kingdom to house Asante heirs who were students of the college. It is called the “WHITE HOUSE”.

It must be noted that, prior to the establishment of Prempeh College in 1949 and Opoku Ware School in 1952, Adisadel College formerly called St. Nicholas Grammar in Cape Coast established in 1910 with the initial purpose as a grammar school for sons of Anglican parents, was in particular a training ground for church personnel and Asante nobility. That is, serving as the Ceremonial Boys School of the Asante Royal Family.

Otumfuo Opoku Ware II, the 15th Asante King was among the many Asante royals who attended Adisadel College and once served as the Head Prefect of the school during his days.

Interestingly, although historically the Anglican missionaries had been in Cape Coast since the 1750s, it was not until 1910 a few years after the conquest of Asante that they established the first school in the colony. Not surprisingly the WHITE HOUSE, built to house Asante heirs In Adisadel College, was strategically located behind the Hamlyn House, named after founder Hamlyn, just across the Canterbury House (also named after the seat of Anglican Church in England).

Does it therefore surprise anyone that the colours of of ADISCO logo are gold, black and green (Asanteman colours?)

It is also worth noting that after Adisadel College, the next major educational project of the Anglican church was the establishment of the St. Monica’s cluster of schools in Asante Mampong which includes the St Monica’s Secondary School and the St. Monica’s Training College.

The constitution of the first Anglican Church in Accra in 1905 (which established the Adisadel College in 1910) and the opening of the Kumasi Anglican church in 1913 (the ceremonial church of the Asantehene) were all carefully planned by the English to coincide with the final grip of the landmass that became known as Ghana.
