Environmental noise pollution is the propagation of noise with ranging impacts on the activities of human and animal life. The safest noise level for the public is eighty decibels. Noise above that can damage the ear of human and animals.
He said most ear and hearing difficulties among humans and animals are caused by noise pollution but most people out of ignorance, don’t take it serious.
According to the environmentalist, activities of aircraft, trains, road vessels, factories and air conditioning systems are the causes of air pollution. Others include noise from animals, moving engines, churches, and mosques, loudspeakers of sound systems, and televisions among others.
He added, “when not regulated, loud sounds can damage the sensitive structures of the inner ear and cause hearing loss. Exposure to noise causes adverse effect such as stress, anxiety, depression, high blood pressure, heart diseases and sleep disturbances”.
On prevention, Mr James Oware encouraged people to plant green trees along roadsides and around houses to reduce the intensity of noise. Adding, ” limits must be set on noise by the regulators while bye laws on noise pollution must be enforced by the metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies “
The environmental health officer said noise pollution is a criminal offence under the public health act 2012 and the criminal code 1960 act 29 which talk about noxious trade of business which is disturbing people in and around your vicinity.
” Since noise pollution is injurious to public health, it is taken serious with the law. Culprits could be charged with causing a public nuisance at the court. They will be fined or jailed”. Mr. Oware warns.
The environmental health officer urged all and sundry to be bold to report any form of noise pollution in wherever he/she is living to the appropriate authorities.
” it is your fundamental human right to report anyone who disturbs public peace to the metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies, environmental protection agency , environmental health officers and they will take action against the responsible person”. He assured.
Mr Oware entreated operators of night clubs and drinking sport, churches and mosques, street preachers,users of household appliances and other activities which pollute the environment with noise to think about the health and safety of persons in their vicinity.
” your activity and its related happiness may be disturbing other peoples peace. You must regulate your equipments to the minimum limit to bring peace and harmony to the environment”. He admonished noise makers.
