Apple’s iPhone 13 lineup has an accelerated release schedule and some long-awaited features, but most excitement will be centred on two stunning design decisions. And now we can see them for the first time on Apple’s new flagship model.
In a new exclusive, massively popular YouTuber Lewis Hilsenteger (aka Unbox Therapy) has attained a detailed model of the iPhone 13 Pro Max. And the highlights are all about size.
iPhone 13 Pro Max Cameras – Much Bigger
What immediately grabs your attention is the size of the new rear cameras. While the images speak for themselves, Hilsenteger measured the diameter of the modules with calipers and compared them with the iPhone 12 Pro Max:
- iPhone 13 Pro Max – 16.99mm
- iPhone 12 Pro Max – 14.10mm
This is a 20% increase in size for each camera module, the biggest physical leap in iPhone history. Larger modules mean larger lenses and larger lenses let in more light which increases image quality, especially in low or poor lighting conditions.
Moreover, every iPhone 13 model is expected to benefit from these larger lenses. Notably, a recent leak of the iPhone 13 Mini design showed the phone will still only have two rear cameras, but they are similarly supersized.
Detailed specifications have yet to leak for each iPhone 13 camera but the ultrawide is expected to receive the biggest jump in quality. It is tipped to move from a five-piece, f2.4, fixed focus lens to a six-piece, f1.8, autofocus. Given ultrawide has been the poorest performing iPhone camera for several generations, this is a very welcome upgrade and it bodes well for similarly major leaps from the other modules.
iPhone 13 Pro Max Notch – Much Smaller
The other big change for the iPhone 13 Pro Max is a much smaller notch and Hilsenteger again measured it compared to its predecessor:
- iPhone 13 Pro Max notch – 34.62mm
- iPhone 12 Pro Max notch – 26.31mm
This is a 30% decrease in size and, while it is not the notch-less endgame everyone wants, it is a massive reduction for a device packing all the components of Apple’s class-leading Face ID facial recognition technology.
Apple has achieved this by moving the earpiece/speaker into the top bezel of the iPhone 13 Pro Max and positioning Face ID’s modules directly underneath it. This layout doesn’t save any depth but it does remove the entire length of the speaker from the notch.
iPhone 13 Pro Max Dimensions
What hasn’t changed much, however, are the overall dimensions of Apple’s next-gen iPhone:
- iPhone 13 Pro Max – 160.85 x 78.08 x 7.52 mm
- iPhone 12 Pro Max – 160.80 x 78.10 x 7.47 mm
These measures are all within a margin of error and, somewhat surprisingly, it was a similar story with the thickness of the iPhone 13 Pro Max when including its rear cameras (10.36mm) compared to the iPhone 12 Pro Max (10.28mm). Button layouts were also identical while the Lighting port remains, despite rumors of a portless model coming this year.
Needless to say, there are still plenty of gaps here. Hilsenteger’s iPhone 13 Pro Max model cannot answer questions about the hotly tipped 120Hz ProMotion displays coming to Pro editions, the potential return of Touch ID or anything about leaked internal changes which include next-gen 5G modems, boosted WiFi speeds and range, MagSafe 2.0 and greater power efficiency.
On the flipside, with iPhone 13 production way ahead of schedule it looks like you may only have to wait 2-3 months before Tim Cook confirms them on stage.
