Per the calculations by Memeber of parliament for Bongo constituency in the Upper East Region, the Greater Accra is expected to have 52 constituencies before 2024 elections.
Hon Edward Bawa writes on his facebook wall, raising issues about constituencies in Greater Accra Region which has large voter population as compared to Ashanti Region but has less constituencies as compared to Ashanti.
“How come that Greater Accra Region is more populous than Ashanti region but Ashanti has more constituencies than Greater Accra?.
While we await the outcome of the population census to answer this question with certainty, it’s important to we arm ourselves with the information below:
The smallest Constituency in Greater Accra is Sege- with Voter population of 42,159 while the smallest Constituency in Ashanti region is Sekyere Afram Plains – with voter population of 18,717.
Seven(7) of the ten(10) Constituencies with highest number of registered voters are in Greater Accra while none of the Constituencies in Ashanti region falls within the the first 10 Constituencies with the highest number of voters.
There are 18 out of the 34 Constituencies in Greater Accra with more than 100,000 registered voters –
Bortianor Ngleshie Amanfro
Ayawaso West Wuogon
Conversely, there are only five (5) Constituencies in Ashanti region with more than 100,000 voters –
If rumorse that the EC, on the usual orders of the NPP, intends to create more Constituencies ahead of the 2024 election based on census figures, then we can safely make projections based on EC’s electoral figures and make a definite demand that Greater Accra must have greater share of newly created Constituencies than Ashanti.
Assuming after the census, and based on projections on EC’s data, the Commission decides to divide all Constituencies with more than 100,000 votes into two, then Greater Accra will get additional 18 Constituencies while Ashanti region will get 5 new Constituencies.
If this happens, then Greater Accra and Ashanti region will all have 52 Constituencies each going into 2024 elections.
This projection is made bearing in mind that population size is not the only variable or determinant for creation of new Constituency.
Again, we should bear in mind that the law for the creation of new Constituencies will only be approved if two-thirds of 275 MPs vote in support of the bill.
